‘Star Wars Awakens‘
Star Wars is back. The Force Awakens has been holding up to its hype, and the numbers are proving it. Spoiler alert, I want to go over the good, bad and the ugly. I went with 7 members of my family and we watched it at the Imax theater in 3D, this is the best way to watch this movie, but the plain old theater would not disappoint either.
I think most of this movie was good. The story, the graphics, the new characters and the old characters. The movie seemed to follow the formula for A New Hope and run over into The Empire Strikes back. A young girl Rey is on a desolate desert planet where she has to fend for herself. Contrasting Luke who wanted to get off Tatooine but was tied down my his uncle. Rey seem to want to stay on the planet Jakku in hopes her family would come back for her or something like that. Luke had the unfortunate luck of R5 blowing a motivator and getting R2D2 who would ultimately be the cause of him deserting his home planet and chasing Darth Vader across the galaxy. Similarly Rey finds BB-8 and gets drawn into a battle and is forced to exit Jakku to save her life. Not to say by the end of the movie many questions and speculation were not formulated about who Rey was and how one could wield the force like she did with 0 formal training. The Force must be strong with her. Fin was another character who before the movie was released there was speculation of him being the son of Leia and Lando.
There are very few answers on where Fin may have come from and if he ends up finding his parents what is his real name might be. The simple fact that Fin was able to wield Anakin’s light saber may be the clue that his is related to the Skywalkers somehow. If Lando is his father perhaps we will see him in episode 8. Poe came in as a dominate character and seemed to fade out and back in a little, but it was hard to tell how much involvement he has with the original story and if he will be a major part to the next movie. He did hold of Kylo Ren to an extent but it seemed to be he was just a strong minded individual and not a wielder of the force. Enter Kylo Ren AKA Ben Solo, or perhaps Ben Skywalker? Ren who reveals his face and his anger issues pretty predominantly throughout the movie.
Ren is fended off by Rey but he is able to trick his father into his demise. I have a bad feeling about this, but someone had to play the Ben Kenobi part of being struck down and becoming the reason for fighting, right?. The only difference was that Ben was only just introduced and at the time was not a long running staple in the franchise. I don’t think this was Lucas’ Idea as Han is not a force wielder and he will not be making ghostly appearances to guide Rey and Fin in the next chapter. I did get a bit of a Gandalf standoff against the Balrog feeling, but I don’t think Han fell into the shadow world to be reborn, I think that was the curtain call for Mr. Solo. There is the slight chance that Ren stabbed Han, to gain the trust of Snoke, and somehow used the light part of the force to protect him and somehow get him off Starkiller Base before the whole thing went up in smoke. But that is just a long shot idea of mine, because I hate to see Han go down like this, I guess I always expected him to float off into the sunset with Chewy and the Falcon.
I would like to see Luke and Rey return to Tatooine, perhaps bring Ben’s hut into the picture, maybe a Sand Person or Jawa as well. It was an intricately wound movie between old and new pleasing both old school fans and new fans, All in All I believe Star Wars delivered a great new chapter, many questions were answered and many remain, but one thing I found for sure is that it will take more then 2 Jedi to conquer the evil that appears to be on the rise for episode 8 & 9.
